Frequently Asked Questions

Can I participate in the research?

If you are a social worker (or student social worker) in England and have worked with at least one child in care in the last 12 months who has self-harmed within this time, we would love to hear from you!

What is self-harm?

Self-harm is hurting or poisoning yourself on purpose (NICE 2022).

Why is this research being carried out?

  • Children in care are at greater risk of self-harm.
  • In 2022 The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) published updated guidelines to improve the care and treatment of people (including children) who self-harm.
  • However, professionals’ awareness of guidelines can be low.
  • We want to know if social workers are aware of the guidelines on self harm and if they use them when working with children in care.
